Inside Mount
Measure from one inside edge to another in three
different locations (as per the arrows), and use the narrowest of
the three dimensions for the width and the longest dimension for
the height. Round your measurement down to the nearest 1/8 of an
inch. When ordering, enter your dimensions without making any additional
allowances.
The necessary deduction will be automatically taken
for inside mounts. Measure every window and measure twice. Windows
may look identical, but rarely are the same size.
Inside mounted shades are installed within your window frame. An inside mount is recommended if your frame depth can accomodate the 2 3/8" bracket width. It is important to make sure that the shade will clear any window hardware (such as cranks and locks). Shades can be ordered as "Reverse Roll" (having the fabric rolling off the front of the shade) to allow additional clearance (see diagram below). Regular Roll shades have the fabric rolling off the back of the shade. An inside mount provides a finished, built-in look without covering the window molding. If your frame depth will not accomodate the shade bracket dimension, choose an outside mount (see how to "Measure - outside mount" shades below).
Please Note: Actual Roller Shade fabric width will be approximately 1 1/2" narrower than your overall width (3/4" fabric edge clearance on both sides). If you need maximum light control and privacy, we recommend an outside mount (see how to "Measure - outside mount" shades below).
Outside Mount
Measure the area that you want to cover, such
as the overal window frame width and height (see drawing above left).
You can also make the shade wider and longer to increase the overlap
of the shade fabric at the sides, top, and bottom (see drawing above
right).
This can be 2" to 3" wider on each side and/or
top and bottom. Measure every window and measure twice. Windows
may look identical, but rarely are the same size.
Outside mounted shades are mounted on your wall
or molding. They are often used to make a window appear larger or
hide an unattractive window and window frame. Outside mounted shades
are also recommended for shallow depth windows. The shade will overlap
the window frame for maximum privacy and light blockage. If mounting
shades on window frame, Regular Roll shades will keep the shade
closest to the face of the frame, providing there are no hardware
constraints. If mounting the shades on the wall above the window
frame, Reverse Roll shades may be considered to allow for the thickness
of the window frame molding.
Measuring Tips
- Use a metal tape measure for
the best accuracy
- Remember to measure your windows, NOT your existing window coverings.
- Measure every window and measure twice, to be sure of your dimensions.
- Round all dimensions down to the nearest 1/8 of an inch.
- Double check all of your dimensions!
- Consider if Regular Roll or Reverse Roll is best for your application
- Consider standard fabric clearances shown below
